Suburban turbine due for replacement

"Meridian Energy, which owns the popular tourist attraction, is considering replacing the ageing turbine as it faces ongoing repair costs. Wellington City Council's strategy and policy committee will next week consider renewing the power company's lease for the site at Hawkins Hill, where the turbine has been generating power since 1993. The lease expired in 2008, but Meridian has continued to lease the land. In 2010 the company contemplated taking down the turbine when it broke down. But public feedback to a campaign at the time showed 85 per cent of people wanted to keep the turbine, which powers homes and businesses in the Wellington suburb"
