"The "smart meter" revolution is turning ugly in the King Country after the local electricity lines company began using meters that can measure half-hourly electricity consumption to more accurately charge customers according to their peak electricity usage"

"The company bases an average of about 35 per cent of each customer's bill on their demand during a single three-hour period each year at any time when the company is having to manage demand by turning off power to hot water cylinders"

"The Lines Company of Te Kuiti is the only electricity lines company that directly bills customers. All others pass on their charges through power retailers"
