"Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh said the company has a ripple injection plant at the Mangamaire substation, which sends out signals through the electricity network controlling relays which activate hot water, storage heaters, other controlled appliances and street lighting"

"A Genesis spokesperson said faulty equipment had caused the problem at the substation. About 1800 customers were affected and the company had received 39 calls from concerned residents. Genesis had sent contractors to fix the problem at these homes, including one where a woman needed hot water because of a medical condition"

"The spokesperson said he understood a part needed to be flown in from Auckland to make the repairs"
