"State power company Meridian Energy is axing its prepay service for Christchurch customers and is switching those customers, about 6800, to its competitor Mercury Energy. It will send letters to its Christchurch customers next week and start switching the customers at a rate of about 500 a week to Mercury's GLO-BUG prepay service. The shift will take three months"

"They would also receive a new device from Mercury [globug] that would tell them how much credit they had. It was not attached to the electricity meter and could be placed in the house where it suited the customer. It would be provided to the Meridian prepay customers and they would not have to pay for it"
