"Genesis Energy will start charging different prices for electricity at different times, later this year, when it will become the first big retailer to harness smart meters to try to smooth out the demand for electricity"

"Mr Gordon said Genesis was able to move first because it invested three years ago in Gentrack software to upgrade its back office systems. "That meant when we did start rolling out advanced meters on a wide scale we had the information systems to manage the data and provide it to our customers"".

"Genesis has so far installed 140,000 smart meters, which can measure consumers' electricity consumption in half-hour periods, out of its installed base of 500,000 meters, to pave the way for the new tariffs"
