Power Panda

Original text of item prior to October 2010 (approximately)

The Power Panda product website is not very clear about the exact methods this device uses to save energy.

The Power Panda FAQ includes the following information:
    • "How does the Power Panda operate?
The Power Panda fits onto your fusebox and links directly with your hot water cylinder and controls the thermostat making system 40-50% more efficient."
    • "Is the Power Panda just a timer?
No, whilst it monitors time it also takes into account the current and the drawing of electricity."
Additional information is provided in the video on the front page of the product site: "What the Power Panda does is to recognise the surplus heating and it prevents it from occurring". This and other statements imply the Power Panda device contains intelligence of some kind.
The inventor
Andrew Greaves
offers a five year warranty on the device and a no questions asked 90 day
money back guarantee. The price also includes installation by a registered electrician.

The site also offers weekly and monthly payment plans over three and six months at additional cost.

Quality of installation is guaranteed: "
We Guarantee the installation by our qualified electricians who have been trained to install the Power Panda. Their installation has a 2 year guarantee, and their installations qualify you for our guarantees of savings. Because of this we require installation by our electricians."

The savings guarantee is explained later in the FAQ: "
Also please remember that we guarantee savings of at least 10% over the first six months or we will refund 100% of your money."

According to a  recently deleted wikipedia article (google cache) Power Panda has been advertised on News Talk ZB radio.

At face value the instructions / user manual and pictures provided for the Power Panda are more or less identical to those of a fairly standard breaker-box mounted digital timer like this DHC15 (at bottom).
Digital timers similar to the DHC15 are available from many different manufacturers. Breaker-box mounted digital timers are also available from electrical wholesalers in NZ (and must also be installed by a registered electrician).
